*This listing is to order a commissioned build of 1 "Frankfurt Flyer" homebuilt special. The car you see below has been my labor of love, built not to show by any means but to satisfy my own infatuation with streamliners and the post WWII "aircraft racers" of Germany. Through the persuasion of enthusiastic friends I succumbed and decided to show the car at MN C&C, Minneapolis Oktoberfest (peoples choice winner) and most recently at the Savannah Speed Classic at Hutchinson Island, Savannah, GA where it caused quite a buzz and was invited to pose at Porsche of Hilton Heads tent with a Rothmans 962! It was also invited to Hilton Head Concours dElegance which I unfortunately cannot attend! I tracked my car at the Grand Prize of America Track on Hutchinson Island. Building this car, starting it for the first time, driving it and finally tracking it has been nothing short of a dream come true. Im offering to build another car on a commissioned process for a special buyer, giving another speed enthusiast the chance to go back in time and experience what it feels like to have your very own Alloy "Special". The car has been featured on Bring A Trailer: http://bringatrailer.com/xxxx/09/11/home-brewed-glockler-porsche-replica/ mentioned in Sports Car Digest: http://www.sportscardigest.com/savannah-speed-classic-xxxx-report-and-photos/ , Sports Car Illustrated http://www.sportscarillustrated.com/News_xxxx/J/news12_xxxx.html , and an in depth look at the build process on Mega Deluxe http://megadeluxe.com/interviews/frankfurt-flyer-chris-runge#more-xxxx4 . In post WWII Germany there were a handful of speed enthusiasts taking scrap aircraft parts and using a little ingenuity they combined them with VW chassis to make "Homebuilt" or "Special" racers. The cars then, unlike today, were not the smooth as glass beauties shown at Concours dElegance events. The cars had true hand built character of their makers in the form of hammer marks, hand planished rivets and yes, even fenders that were not symmetrical to each other! All of which add greatly to the character of hand built racers. Walter Glockler, a VW dealer from Frankfurt, Germany was a speed enthusiast in his own right. His early cars were Hanomog powered and soon he went to a mid-engine VW powerplant and running gear. Porsche took notice of his VW powered racer and the story goes that he may have been in breach of contract with them. Porsche approached Glockler and they came to an agreement that he could keep racing the tight skinned, C.H. Weidenhausen shaped, alloy car so long as he used Porsche power and put their name on the car. Eventually, the little Glockler Porsche evolved into what we now know as the "Giant Killer", The Porsche 550 Spyder. I developed an obsession with Porsche and specifically these handbuilt streamline racing cars as a young child. Then in xxxx I stumbled onto a Porsche 912 for sale along with decades of VW and Porsche speed goodies by a widow at a rural South Dakota farm. In the barns at the old farm I found all of the tools one would use to build their own alloy bodied cars. I made a promise to the widow that if she let me purchase the tools I would build and finish my own car just as her past husband had been doing since the 60s. She agreed and a deal was made. With no formal training, in December of xxxx I began penciling shapes onto 3/4" sheets of plywood, cutting and forming the wooden buck you see here: My choice for a chassis was to use a ladder framed, Mid engine, Volkswagen 4 Cylinder powered running gear with a VW front Beam and rear transaxle. The dimensional specs I used are akin to the original VW Powered Glockler. Utilizing the VW powertrain gives the car the right look, feel and fun factor without breaking the bank. My idea being that other people on a limited budget could do the same thing or I could build an affordable, limited number of alloy racers for other enthusiasts. Although fiberglass kit cars certainly serve their place in the world of auto enthusiasm, my desire was to use the techniques and skills that the craftsman would have in
